The Blues no longer have any financial interest in the Cumbrian goalkeeper’s progress.

That was confirmed by club directors in a recent supporters’ groups (CUSG) meeting.

Trafford recently left Manchester City for Leeds United in a deal worth a reported £40m plus add-ons.

The 23-year-old spent time in Carlisle’s academy before joining Man City aged 12. After coming through the City ranks, he left for Burnley in 2023 only to rejoin City two years later. A further 12 months on, the England international departed for Leeds.

Carlisle earned some revenue from previous moves involving the keeper but will not do so this time, according to the club’s finance director Suzanne Kidd.

A report from the latest CUSG meeting shows that United’s supporter liaison officer Simon Clarkson asked “whether the club would benefit financially from James Trafford’s transfer from Manchester City to Leeds United.”

Kidd, the report says, “confirmed that Carlisle United no longer held any financial interest in James Trafford following his previous sale back to Manchester City.”

United’s initial revenue from Trafford’s moves was determined by the Elite Player Performance Plan (EPPP), which sets specific rules and percentages on future player transfers.

Former chief executive Nigel Clibbens said in 2023 that Carlisle would get “a small percentage” from Trafford, who at the time was on the brink of moving from Man City to Burnley.

The director added that in the cases of Trafford and fellow former academy keeper Dean Henderson, future transfers would not deliver “transformational” revenue to the Blues.

It was different in the case of defender Jarrad Branthwaite, Clibbens said, with Carlisle potentially in line for “significant” sell-on benefits should he leave Everton for big money.
