NASCAR Playoff Picture: Who Is Heating Up at the Right Time?

The NASCAR Cup Series has reached the part of the regular season where every position in the standings carries more weight. With the 26-race regular season almost over, the return of the Chase format has made the fight for the top 16 especially important. There are no automatic “win and you’re in” spots this year. Drivers have to earn their place through points, and the margin around the cut line is getting uncomfortable.

Denny Hamlin remains in control of the regular-season standings, sitting on 969 points after Richmond. Ryan Blaney, Ty Gibbs and Tyler Reddick follow, while Chase Briscoe, Chase Elliott, Christopher Bell and Kyle Larson round out the top eight. Hamlin has also built a significant cushion over the field, giving him a strong position heading into the final stretch.

The more interesting battle is lower down the order. Shane van Gisbergen currently occupies 16th place, the final position that would send a driver into the 10-race Chase. Ryan Preece is the first driver outside the field and trails van Gisbergen by 50 points with two regular-season races remaining. That gap is not impossible to overcome, particularly with New Hampshire and Daytona still on the schedule, but Preece cannot afford another quiet weekend.

Joey Logano has already changed the shape of the battle once. After struggling through the first half of the season, the two-time winner has surged into the Chase picture, including his Richmond victory. NASCAR.com noted that Logano had been sitting in a very different position only weeks ago, making his recent run one of the clearest examples of how quickly the standings can change.

New Hampshire is therefore more than another race on the calendar. The Dollar Tree 301 on Sunday is the penultimate race of the regular season, and the flat 1.058-mile track can reward drivers who manage tires and track position well. NASCAR’s own preview has highlighted how different pit strategies — two tires, four tires or staying out — can all put a driver in contention. For anyone hovering around the cut line, a good strategic call could be worth far more than it looks on paper.

There is also a bigger reason to watch the top of the standings. The 2026 Chase is not the elimination-style postseason fans have become used to. The top 16 drivers after Race 26 advance, points are reset for the Chase, and the field then competes across 10 races without elimination rounds. The regular-season order matters because it determines the starting points for the Chase, giving the drivers near the front an advantage before the championship battle begins.

That makes the final two regular-season races a two-sided fight. Drivers such as Hamlin, Blaney and Reddick are protecting valuable seeding positions, while those near 16th are fighting simply to get through the door. Logano’s recent rise shows how quickly momentum can change, but the bubble drivers have much less room for mistakes.

For NASCAR fans, the most compelling storyline may not be the race for the regular-season championship at all. It is the group trying to survive the cut line. New Hampshire could create a major swing before Daytona closes the regular season, and with the Chase field based entirely on points, every position gained or lost now has a direct consequence.
