THURSDAY MORNING DONE DEAL: Manchester United officially announce the signing of £80m South American superstar with 34 goals and 18 assists last season – Transfer agreed last night, medical set for this morning, unveiling to follow – Player to join training ahead of pre-season friendlies

Manchester United have officially completed one of the most high-profile signings of the summer as they look to rebuild their attack for the 2025/26 campaign.

United have been working behind the scenes to secure multiple additions, and while a new No. 9 remains a top priority, a versatile winger was also on the wishlist — and now they’ve landed their man.

According to The Athletic’s Mario Cortegana, United have successfully agreed a deal to sign Rodrygo from Real Madrid for a reported fee of £80 million, with the player set to undergo a medical this morning before being unveiled as the club’s third summer signing.

The report reveals that manager Rúben Amorim is a huge admirer of the 24-year-old Brazilian and pushed strongly for his signing. Amorim is said to be “completely convinced” that Rodrygo can become a superstar at Old Trafford, especially when deployed on the left wing.

Rodrygo arrives after standout season at Madrid

Rodrygo enjoyed an impressive 2024/25 campaign with Real Madrid, scoring 14 goals and providing 10 assists in 51 appearances across all competitions under Carlo Ancelotti.

While he featured on both wings, Rodrygo was particularly lethal from the left flank, where he contributed 12 goal involvements in just 12 matches. Comparatively, he managed the same number of contributions from 30 appearances on the right.

At Madrid, that left-sided role is firmly occupied by Vinícius Júnior, limiting Rodrygo’s starting chances. That made a move to United all the more attractive, with Amorim ready to build part of his frontline around the Brazilian.

The Brazil international will resume training with the United squad immediately, ahead of a series of pre-season friendlies scheduled for later this month.

With this major deal wrapped up, Manchester United have made a strong statement of intent — and fans will be eager to see Rodrygo light up the Premier League in red.
