Manchester United Close in on Matheus Cunha as New Number 10—Garnacho’s Future in Doubt
Wolverhampton Wanderers forward Matheus Cunha has emerged as Manchester United’s top target for the number 10 role this summer.
Cunha enjoyed a standout Premier League season with Wolves, racking up 15 goals and six assists. According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, the Brazilian has now agreed to a five-year deal at Old Trafford, with an option for an additional year.
United are set to trigger Cunha’s £62.5 million release clause, paying the fee in instalments. The 25-year-old is expected to inherit the iconic number 10 jersey, currently worn by Marcus Rashford, who is widely expected to leave the club this summer. Rashford has held the shirt since 2018, but his departure would leave it vacant for Cunha.
Cunha’s arrival could have major implications for Alejandro Garnacho’s future at United. With manager Ruben Amorim planning to deploy both Cunha and Bruno Fernandes as number 10s next season, Garnacho’s playing time could be significantly reduced—especially as United won’t have European football to offer.
Amorim has reportedly told Garnacho to seek a new club, signalling that the Argentine winger is not in his plans. The 19-year-old, who was left out of United’s squad against Aston Villa, has already hinted at a potential exit.
United are said to be open to offers for Garnacho, valuing him at £65 million—a price that has attracted interest from Chelsea, Atletico Madrid, Napoli, and Juventus. As a homegrown academy player, any sale would represent pure profit for the club, further incentivizing a transfer.
