
Manchester United-linked Viktor Gyokeres may have handed Sporting CP his final parting gift in their Taca de Portugal win over rivals Benfica on Sunday.
The game had been labelled as Gyokeres’ potential final game for Sporting with interest from England increasing. United and Arsenal are both set to move to land the Sweden international once the transfer window opens.
Gyokeres has been a key figure for Rui Borges this season, helping them to another league title. His 39 goals in 33 league games this season, emerging as one of Europe’s most-prolific goalscorers.
On Sunday, Gyokeres played what could have been his final game for Sporting against Benfica. After falling 1-0 down to Orkun Kokcu’s opener, Gyokeres stepped-up and scored from the penalty spot in the 11th minute of added time.
Sporting went on to win the game with Conrad Harder and Francisco Trincao netting in extra-time. The victory means the Portuguese side have completed the double this season.
Speaking after the win, Gyokeres continued to remain tight-lipped on his future. Asked about what lies ahead, he said: “I don’t know anything, I tried to focus on the last few games, if something is true, we’ll see.”
His comments came after he refused to get involved in transfer talk with an interview with Portuguese TV channel SIC Noticias. “We’ll see. It’s the future. Football is like that, you never know what’s going to happen,” he said. “As we saw this season, you never know what’s going to happen. And it’s the same thing now. We’ll see what the future holds.”
