Marcus Rashford’s Barcelona loan deal already in jeopardy, Catalans plotting drastic move – report

Manchester United was keen to get rid of their “bomb squad” this summer, and Marcus Rashford was one of them.

The Englishman was once regarded as one of the best players to come out of the club’s academy and progressed through the ranks at Old Trafford. However, lately, things haven’t gone as planned.

Rashford’s career took a wild turn in just 18 months, going from having the best season ever under former boss Erik ten Hag to losing favor under Ruben Amorim.

In January of this year, the 27-year-old left the Red Devils to sign a six-month loan deal with Aston Villa. After a respectable stint at Villa Park, Rashford was approached by Barcelona this summer and spent the remainder of the season on loan at Camp Nou.

According to reports, the Catalans have the option to permanently acquire the Englishman for about £30 million next summer. However, it now seems that his stay at Camp Nou may be terminated in the middle of the agreement.

Rashford has endured a slow start in LaLiga

Rashford was chosen by Barcelona because they were looking for an affordable way to improve their attack this summer. But since coming to Catalonia, the player has fallen short of expectations.

Although he has played in all three of Barcelona’s games this season, Rashford only started one of them.

The Catalans are thinking about ending the loan agreement abruptly in January, according to Spanish sources (via The Manchester Evening News).

It’s interesting to note that the contract allows for an early exit, so long as the La Liga winners agree to pay a £4.3 million penalty cost.

The report adds that Rashford’s performances this season have reportedly forced the Barcelona hierarchy to contemplate such a drastic step.

A final decision on the matter, however, will be made in the coming months, so the 27 year old will have to step up his efforts if he wants to stay.

Rashford is under contract at Old Trafford until 2028

Rashford is no longer in Ruben Amorim’s plans, despite having a contract with United through 2028.

The Premier League powerhouses are still keen to sign him on a long-term basis and are hopeful that a successful spell in Spain will further their goals.

The Red Devils will save over £12 million in yearly salary from the agreement, even though they haven’t received a loan fee for the Englishman.

As a result, the English powerhouses may suffer financial consequences if the temporary agreement is terminated at the start of the new year. The head coach at Old Trafford may also become extremely irate.
