A ‘significant U-turn’ suggests Manchester United already regret a £100m transfer decision, which has exposed ‘furious’ Ruben Amorim…
At Manchester United, Ruben Amorim is still under fire, and there are indications that the strain is getting to him since the novice head coach is running out of supporters.
It seems that a purportedly revolutionary summer transfer window has had little to no impact. Man Utd has the same issues; after spending £230 million on acquisitions and getting rid of some deadwood, they remain just as weak offensively and are simple to beat.
Man Utd is still limited by Amorim’s headstrong insistence on sticking with his disastrous 3-4-3 shape. His eventual downfall, which may come sooner rather than later, is probably going to be largely attributed to his unwillingness to change, a la Ange Postecoglou.
Despite Kobbie Mainoo being one of the most well-known victims of the head coach’s employment, there is still no proof that a Manchester United player is playing better under Amorim’s structure than in previous setups.
Amorim was a major factor in the Premier League powerhouses’ inability to see the best of the England international for several months, as Mainoo went from being perhaps one of the top prospects in the world to a benchwarmer for a very weak Manchester United team.
Mainoo’s positive standing was highlighted in a GiveMeSport article on the club’s midfield situation, and Man Utd supporters were relieved that common sense won out in the final week of the transfer window as Sir Jim Ratcliffe and company quickly put an end to his hopes of leaving on loan to secure regular game time ahead of next year’s World Cup.
According to the article, “there have been indications that they would be more keen to sell Bruno Fernandes,” but “United have made a significant U-turn as internal discussions with Mainoo have resulted in him being increasingly confident that he can become a key part of Amorim’s plans.”
A day after this information was made public, a story from Football Transfers asserted that Amorim was “left furious” as Manchester United’s decisive decision about Mainoo had stopped a last-minute approach for Conor Gallagher of Atletico Madrid.
As a final resort, would Gallagher have made sense? Most likely, yes. However, Amorim’s actions, both in public and in reports, reveal his negligence with regard to a Manchester United player who should be the head coach’s top priority because of his higher ceiling than most of the team’s present players.
The fact that club executives seem to have given Mainoo such strong internal support speaks volumes about the head coach’s status, and Amorim should be doing everything in his power to make Mainoo an essential member of his squad.
Given that Man Utd’s “willingness to sell” (as reported by GiveMeSport) suggests they already regret doing everything in their power to keep their club captain on board rather than letting him go, it would have been easier to integrate Mainoo if they had taken advantage of Fernandes when the Saudi Pro League offered £100 million in the summer.
Fernandes’ quality is undeniable, and he was unquestionably Manchester United’s best player the previous season. However, his early-season struggles from a deeper position have shown that the club made a huge mistake by not maximizing his value and using the profit to make the game-changing acquisition of a top-tier No. 6 (like Carlos Baleba), which will keep them behind for at least another year.
