Manchester United’s ‘power brokers’ have set Ruben Amorim a Premier League target for next season amid their disastrous campaign.
On Sunday, Man United suffered their 17th league loss of the season at the hands of West Ham United.
Amorim’s team now sits in 16th place in the Premier League standings after the Hammers defeated them 2-0 at Old Trafford.
The Red Devils have only won 10 league games this season and have only 39 league points.
However, they could win the Europa League and qualify for the Champions League, saving their 2024–2025 season.
Man United’s management is aiming for a top six Premier League finish the next season, regardless of whether the team wins the Europa League.
A top six finish is ‘acceptable’ for next season, according to the Manchester Evening News, which cites the club’s ‘power brokers’.
Right now, Man United is a whopping 24 points behind Aston Villa, who are in sixth position.
With Champions League football up for grabs for the top five, sixth place would guarantee Europa League play this season.
There are two league games left for Man United this season.
Naturally, UEFA has chosen a controversial referee for their Europa League final matchup against Tottenham this month.
Before playing Villa on the final day of the season, Amorim’s team will play Chelsea on Friday to continue their struggling league campaign.
Speaking after Man United’s latest setback, Amorim called for a ‘strong summer’.
He said: “For me, the biggest concern is that feeling it’s okay (to lose), we cannot change our position so much so it’s okay. That is the biggest problem in our club in this moment, because we are losing the feeling of we are a massive club and it’s the end of the world to lose a game at home. I think that is the biggest concern in our club.
“We need to be really strong in the summer and be brave. We will not have a next season like this if we start like this. If the feeling is still here we should give space to different person.”
