Cameras captured Manchester United defender Luke Shaw taunting teammate Rasmus Hojlund during the team’s 2-0 loss to West Ham.
Three days after making it to the Europa League final, United was dragged back to earth as West Ham, another Premier League underdog, defeated them to record their first victory at Old Trafford since 2007.
Tomas Soucek and Jarrod Bowen scored for the visitors, sentencing United to a 17th top-flight defeat of the season, with nine of them coming on home turf.
In his post-match press conference, Ruben Amorim took no prisoners in his criticism of his players for lacking a sense of urgency and for not caring about losing games. Hojlund, who has struggled for the majority of the season, was one player who continued to struggle and failed to make a significant impact up front.
This most recent disappointing outcome was a bitter one for the Portuguese coach.
Amorim’s decision to start Hojlund over Chido Obi backfired spectacularly, as the seasoned defender gave him a dressing down. In addition to wasting multiple chances that could have changed the outcome of the game, Hojlund struggled with the fundamentals and was unable to hold up play effectively or make smart runs off the ball.
One such instance saw Hojlund carelessly lose possession to West Ham, which infuriated Shaw, who didn’t hold back in his outburst.
After yet another unsuccessful attempt to handle the ball, Shaw lost his temper just before the halftime whistle and yelled, “Ras, come on!” at Hojlund.
This season, Hojlund has only managed four Premier League goals.
Shaw and Hojlund weren’t the only United players involved in a heated argument, though. According to the Manchester Evening News, Kobbie Mainoo and Bruno Fernandes also got into a fight.
MEN remark that in the 13th minute of proceedings. Perhaps as a result of Mainoo’s placement, Fernandes “had a very animated moan” at him.
With two games remaining, United has fallen to 16th place in the standings and has not yet reached 40 points.
