Ruben Amorim could bring back Manchester United’s tradition for his first final in charge of the Red Devils.
Manchester United has advanced to their first Europa League final since 2021, when they were defeated by Villarreal in a penalty shootout. The team, known as the Old Trafford club, previously secured the title in 2017 under the management of Jose Mourinho, who led them to triumph against Ajax.
Amorim may have the opportunity to emulate his compatriot by securing a European championship for Manchester United. Following his team’s victory over Bilbao, he remarked, ‘My primary concern is the upcoming match, as I aim to avoid any injuries before the final. It is imperative that we win; otherwise, our efforts will be in vain. We shall see.’
What is Man United’s cup final tradition?
The tradition of wearing club suits was established by Sir Alex Ferguson, who mandated that the team arrive at away matches in formal attire and don the suits while boarding the aircraft. David Moyes and Louis van Gaal adhered to this tradition, which Ole Gunnar Solskjaer valued greatly and reinstated with greater rigor before it was limited to cup finals following the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020.
United donned suits for the 2021 Europa League final, but opted for tracksuits prior to the 2023 Carabao Cup final, which Ten Hag and his squad won. Players were expected to wear suits crafted by Paul Smith, a long-time collaborator and tailor, but Ten Hag had different plans.
According to The Sun, the Dutch manager believed that wearing suits disrupted their schedule, adding an additional ten minutes to their itinerary due to the time required to change into training gear for a pre-match pitch walk.
Before the match, Ten Hag contacted an official located on the other side of the globe to share his perspective, and the official concurred. For the FA Cup finals against Manchester City at Wembley under Ten Hag, United wore their Paul Smith suits, but arrived in tracksuits for the Community Shield in August.
Amorim maintains a relaxed approach to his sideline attire, yet he and the United players wore formal suits for the funeral of the late receptionist Kath Phipps in January.
