Ruben Amorim confirms board talks as Man United summer transfer plan is clear amid Ashworth return

Manchester United is preparing for a hectic summer in the transfer market as Ruben Amorim continues to oversee the club’s reconstruction.

The team’s league performance this season has been disappointing; however, they are only eight days away from a Europa League final, where a win would allow them to conclude this challenging season with a trophy and secure Champions League qualification.

It has been an eventful day for United, with Amorim addressing discussions he has had with the club’s leadership amid growing scrutiny regarding his managerial performance.

The summer transfer strategy for United has been detailed, and there was an unexpected return to football for a former United player. Below is a summary of the significant Manchester United news on Tuesday, May 13.

Amorim reveals board talks

Ruben Amorim has talked with Manchester United’s board about what the team needs to be “so much better.”

“I’m really embarrassed that in 26 games [his league games in charge], we win six, and something is wrong in the way we play football. And sometimes it’s not about how we play tactically and technically,” he told Sky Sports.

“It’s the way we face competition, the way we suffer, the way we get mad because we’re losing and the way we protect the goal. These things we need to improve and sometimes it’s just inside the pitch, it’s outside the pitch.

“That feeling I’m talking about, fighting towards the end and facing competition, it’s not ok to lose and it’s not ok to draw. It doesn’t matter if we can change our league position or not.”

Amorim continued: “That feeling is nothing about confidence, it’s about the belief and understanding that we are in Manchester United and we don’t want to be the worst in the league.

“Our position [16th in the table] is unacceptable. For me, that is not a lack of confidence, it’s something more profound, and I talk with the board and with everybody, even with the fans, in every moment. I have a clear feeling of what this team needs to be so much better.

“That helps me to maintain that level of not going down too much, or so high in some moments”.

Berrada confirms summer transfer approach

With the outcome of the clash with Spurs deciding whether they will be in Europe or not next season, United have had to plan for two scenarios ahead of this summer.

Speaking at the unveiling of United’s new stadium plans in March, chief executive Omar Berrada said: “There’s no doubt that if we qualify to the Champions League, we will have more revenues and we’ll have more capacity to invest in the team.

“But we are putting in place various financial measures to allow us to go and invest at the summer, even if we’re outside of Europe.”

Ashworth’s return to football

Dan Ashworth is poised to assume a new position with the Football Association, as reported by the BBC. After unexpectedly leaving his role as sporting director at Manchester United in December, he is preparing to embark on his first professional endeavor since his brief time at Old Trafford.

The 54-year-old will take on the role of head of elite men’s and women’s development at the FA. Ashworth previously dedicated six years to the FA as their director of elite development from 2012 to 2018, and a significant aspect of his new responsibilities will involve supervising the advancement of homegrown coaches in England.

Additionally, he is anticipated to manage the next phase of the renovation of St George’s Park.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe described Ashworth as one of “the top sporting directors in the world” when he joined United, however, he spectacularly left the club after just five months in his role.
