Paul Scholes has criticised one Manchester United star after seeing what he did against Athletic Club.
On Thursday evening, United arrived at Old Trafford with a significant advantage for the Europa League final following their 3-0 victory in the first leg against Bilbao.
After conceding a remarkable goal from Mikel Jauregizar in the 31st minute, United intensified their efforts in the second half. Ultimately, the Red Devils secured a 4-1 victory, highlighted by two goals from Mason Mount, along with contributions from Casemiro and Rasmus Hojlund. United is set to face fellow Premier League team Tottenham Hotspur in the final, scheduled for May 21 at San Mames in Bilbao.
During the half-time break on TNT Sports, United legend Scholes expressed his dissatisfaction with winger Alejandro Garnacho, who squandered a significant opportunity in the first half. The Argentine was presented with a clear chance on goal, but opted for a clever chipped finish that went wide of the target.
Scholes said: “I’ve never seen Garnacho score a goal like this. He’s not a player with that sort of guile for me. The pace he’s got there, he’s just got to go round the goalkeeper.
“There’s an acre of space there to the right-hand side of him, the ‘keeper will never get anywhere near him, just hit it into an empty net.”
He added: “I’ve never seen this type of finish from him. We said before the game, he’s brilliant running through, he gets in great positions.
“But sometimes, or a lot of the time, he makes the wrong decision. I think he’s done that there.”
Overall, it was a disappointing evening for Garnacho as he was taken off in the 62nd minute, replaced by Amad Diallo.
Reflecting on the match, United boss Ruben Amorim said: “In the moments, I’m just worried about the next game, to try to manage everything, not to get injuries for the final.
“But again, we need to win it. If we don’t win it, it’s nothing, it means nothing for us, so let’s see.”
United are back in Premier League action this weekend when they take on West Ham United at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.
