Manchester United are yet to discover whether they will be playing in the UEFA Champions League or no European competition whatsoever next season, but transfer plans are in the works nonetheless.
With a trophy and a UEFA Champions League ticket up for grabs, Ruben Amorim leads the Red Devils to Bilbao for their matchup with Tottenham in the UEFA Europa League final next Wednesday. Should Manchester United win, it would significantly change the course of their summer transfer window.
The player will be more likely to move to Old Trafford, but Jonathan David, a target for Manchester United, has already declared his resignation before the UEFA Europa League final has even begun.
Jonathan David says he will leave Lille
According to TBR Football, Manchester United, Liverpool, and Chelsea reached out to sign David in April after learning the Canada international might leave the Ligue 1 team this summer.
After five years at the Stade Pierre Mauroy, the Lille No. 9 has now announced his departure from the French team.
David, who was scouted by Arsenal, has been a huge success at Lille, with 30 assists and 109 goals in 231 games since joining from Ge
nt in 2020.
The New York native has scored 25 goals and provided 12 assists in 48 games in all competitions this season alone.
Manchester United target has been called “one of the best strikers in the world”
The 25-year-old could be one of the greatest free transfers in recent memory if Amorim is able to acquire him this summer.
In a recent assessment of the Manchester United target, Canadian football analyst Tony Marinaro referred to David as “one of the best” attackers on the planet, posting on X (formerly known as Twitter): Enjoy Jonathan David, everyone in Canada.
“He is a student of the game. He does everything right. Simply put, he’s a phenom. One of the best strikers in the world is Canadian and at age 18 he was with an amateur club in Ottawa. What an inspiration for all Canadian players!”
Incredibly, David has scored 18 goals this season—more than Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee combined—so, should it happen, this would be a very sensible move for Manchester United.
