Manchester United is poised to make an unexpected move during the summer transfer window, with a potential acquisition of Jonathan Tah being reported by Chris Wheeler of Mail Sport. The Red Devils have the opportunity to salvage their season by clinching the UEFA Europa League title, facing Tottenham Hotspur in the final on May 21.
A victory for Ruben Amorim’s team would yield £5 million in prize money, along with a minimum of £70 million from qualifying for the next season’s UEFA Champions League. These funds will be allocated towards revitalizing Amorim’s squad, which has struggled in the Premier League, currently positioned 15th in the standings after 35 matches.
Defensive issues have plagued the team, as United has conceded 51 goals in the league, just seven goals away from their poor record that led to a -1 goal difference last season.
Man Utd Could Pull Off “Surprise Signing”
Significant alterations are anticipated within the squad, with numerous departures expected as players’ contracts come to an end. Victor Lindelof, aged 30, and Jonny Evans, aged 37, will become free agents in June, prompting the club to seek at least one replacement.
According to the report, the primary objectives include acquiring a new striker and a playmaker, while the addition of a box-to-box midfielder and a new centre-back remains a possibility. The club’s leading attacking targets are Matheus Cunha from Wolverhampton Wanderers and Liam Delap from Ipswich Town, although there is also potential interest in an out-of-contract player, Tah.
“Jonathan Tah, who is out of contract at Bayern Leverkusen, could be an option in central defence, and don’t rule out United looking at other free transfers or cheaper deals if they don’t land the Champions League windfall. In terms of surprises, it’s quite possible United will catch us out with a left-field deal before the transfer window closes.”
At 29 years of age, Tah is poised to depart from Bayer Leverkusen this summer and has attracted interest from several clubs, including Manchester United, who appear to be monitoring the Germany international. Additionally, Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Inter Milan are reportedly considering the seasoned centre-back, who played a pivotal role in assisting Xabi Alonso in leading the Germans to the Bundesliga title in 2024.
Although the Red Devils have placed Cunha at the forefront of their transfer targets, there are also discussions regarding a potential acquisition of Brentford striker Bryan Mbeumo. They have made inquiries about the Cameroonian and have been informed that a fee of approximately £75 million will be required.
