Manchester United legend Paul Scholes admits he ‘doesn’t like’ one aspect of Ruben Amorim’s Europa League final preparations.
Manchester United is set to compete against fellow Premier League team Tottenham in the Europa League final after defeating Athletic Bilbao in the semi-finals.
The final is scheduled to be held in Bilbao, Spain, following UEFA’s decision to relocate this significant match featuring two English clubs.
Manchester United’s journey in the Europa League has starkly contrasted with their performance in the Premier League, where they have struggled throughout the season. Currently, the Red Devils are positioned 15th in the league standings, having suffered an alarming 16 losses this season.
However, they have the opportunity to redeem their 2024/25 season by clinching the Europa League title, which would secure their place in the Champions League.
Amorim has two league matches to manage before leading his team into the Europa League final, facing West Ham United on Sunday and Chelsea the following Friday.
It is anticipated that Amorim will opt to field younger players against West Ham and Chelsea as Manchester United prioritizes the Europa League final.
Nevertheless, Scholes disagrees with Amorim’s strategy and expresses his disapproval of the notion of deploying a so-called weaker team in the Premier League.
“Manchester United should be able to play in two or three competitions at once without sacrificing something, and they’ve clearly sacrificed the league. I don’t like it and I don’t agree with it and I believe there has to be some sort of standards required in a Premier League team,” he wrote in his TNT Sports column. “It’s almost as if they go into Premier League games and there’s an acceptance that they’re not going to win the game, which is madness. I think the acceptance has come from everyone.”
Scholes added: “I think it’s come from the manager even though he won’t admit it. He’s not playing teams to win games of football in the league. I think even fans are thinking let’s get these league games out of the way because the league has been a disaster.”
Amorim rang the changes for Man United’s league game against Brentford ahead of their second-leg against Bilbao.
They ended up losing 4-3 to Brentford, but his decision ultimately paid off following their Europa League victory.
