According to sources, Manchester United has “launched a bid” for Oihan Sancet, a midfielder for Athletic Bilbao, ahead of the summer transfer season.
For the most of the Premier League season, Ruben Amorim’s Red Devils have been a complete mess, winning only ten of their first 36 games.
With just four teams in the English top flight scoring less goals than the Red Devils this season, Man Utd is now 16th in the Premier League standings.
If Manchester United defeats Tottenham in the Europa League final next week, they might still earn a spot in the Champions League despite their dismal Premier League performance this season.
With the Champions League wealth potentially providing them with an expanded budget, INEOS would have some breathing room in the transfer market if they defeated Spurs on Wednesday.
However, given that Bruno Fernandes is the most well-known player to be linked to a move away from Old Trafford, it is still possible that Manchester United may need to sell some of its players in order to rebuild Amorim’s team.
Al-Hilal, a Saudi Arabian team, has reportedly named Fernandes their “top target” for the summer and is “ready to make a record-breaking offer” to the Portugal international.
And now Spanish publication Fichajes believes that Man Utd ‘have set their sights on’ a deal for Athletic Bilbao star Sancet ‘as a target to improve their midfield’.
According to the source, Sancet has become a “signing option in light of the possible departure” of Fernandes, “whose move to Al Hilal in the Saudi Pro League is already gaining traction.” The Premier League team has reportedly “launched a bid” for Sancet.
Sancet has produced 17 goals and three assists this season, and Manchester United “values him as a suitable candidate to fill Fernandes’ role.” However, it may be difficult to get the midfielder to leave his Athletic Bilbao contract, which expires in 2032.
The €80 million buyout clause must be met by any offer, as Athletic Bilbao has “made it clear that it is not willing to negotiate his transfer.”
Stephen Warnock, a former defender for Liverpool, maintains that Manchester United might have to trade Fernandes in the summer because they “may see him as the lifeline to reinvest in the squad.”
Warnock told Casino Apps: “No transfer is off limits for Manchester United, especially if they lose the Europa League final. That includes Bruno Fernandes – they will need funds, and they may see him as the lifeline to reinvest in the squad.
“I know there have been links to the Saudi Pro League, I’d hope he’s more ambitious than that. The money he’ll be on at United will be more than sufficient, but you just never know in football. United’s hand may be forced by financial constraints.”
