This summer, Manchester United desperately needs more attacking additions to give themselves the best chance of reaching their previous level of success.
With only a few games left, the Red Devils are still in the bottom half of the Premier League, which emphasizes how awful they’ve been in 2024–2025.
Although Ruben Amorim has restored the positive vibes at Old Trafford, their record of only 42 goals in 35 games demonstrates how underwhelming their forward play has been.
His two senior alternatives, Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee, have only scored seven goals in the league between them, which has contributed to their poor play in the last third.
Work is already being done behind the scenes in preparation for the summer, so it won’t be shocking to see the club try to improve the position by entering the market.
The latest on United’s hunt for new forwards this summer
Numerous names have been suggested for the striker position in recent weeks, including Viktor Gyokeres, Liam Delap, and Hugo Ekitiké, all of whom are potential candidates to join United.
Delap was particularly regarded as the top choice prior to the transfer window, with his £30 million relegation release clause considered a reasonable deal.
However, Wolves forward Matheus Cunha seems to be the frontrunner for a transfer to Old Trafford this summer, according to the latest update from Fabrizio Romano.
He indicated that the Red Devils are currently in the lead for the 25-year-old’s signature, with negotiations reportedly at an advanced stage, making personal terms likely to be settled soon.
The reliable journalist also claimed that the hierarchy have no issues with paying his £62.5m release clause, with a move edging closer to completion.
Why United’s target would be amazing alongside Osimhen
Victor Osimhen, a Nigerian striker, has also been frequently mentioned as a potential summer transfer to United, giving Amorim the boost he needs.
The 26-year-old is currently enjoying a stellar goal-scoring run, scoring 33 goals in 37 games while on loan at Galatasaray from Italian team Napoli.
If he made the transfer and had an excellent partnership with Cunha in the final third, the Red Devils manager would be overjoyed to see such a record.
The Brazilian, whose 2024–2025 stats would undoubtedly help Osimhen’s pursuit of goals in the Premier League, would be signed to play in a number 10 role behind the striker.
He has been able to record 2.0 chances created per 90 and 2.15 successful dribbles per 90, clearly trying to bring the ball forward whenever possible and helping Osimhen along the way.
The Brazilian’s offensive statistics are simply outstanding, and his skill set gives him and the Nigerian the finest opportunity to support United’s front line.
According to journalist Eduardo Hagn, Cunha is “phenomenal.” He has 3.6 shots per 90 and has the ability to score goals, as seen by his 15 Premier League goals to date.
It would be a significant investment to bring the two players to the Theatre of Dreams this summer, but their skills are evident from the numbers they’ve produced in recent months.
If they could land both players, it would create a deadly partnership at Old Trafford, with the aforementioned duo having the chance to make themselves heroes as they aim to play a key role in their revival.7
