Man United handed Mason Greenwood windfall reality as transfer decision made

Reports suggest that a return to the Premier League for Mason Greenwood appears improbable. Greenwood has enjoyed an impressive season with Marseille in France, the club to which Manchester United transferred their academy graduate for £26.6 million last summer.

He currently ranks as the second highest goalscorer in Ligue 1, netting 18 goals, just three shy of PSG’s Ousmane Dembele. The 23-year-old previously scored 35 goals and provided 12 assists in 129 appearances for United, indicating that he has maintained his scoring ability since departing from the Reds.

Despite these statistics making Greenwood a potentially valuable asset in the transfer market, recent reports indicate that a return to the Premier League is unlikely. TEAMtalk has noted that several Premier League clubs have expressed private interest in Greenwood, yet they are not expected to pursue him this summer.

Furthermore, United is reportedly entitled to receive 50 percent of any profits from a potential sale of Greenwood by Marseille. While a lucrative transfer to a Premier League club seems doubtful, there are indications of interest from clubs in Saudi Arabia.

Currently, the Saudi Pro League’s interest in Greenwood remains speculative; however, historical trends in the Middle East regarding player transfers often involve substantial financial transactions. For instance, Aston Villa recently transferred 21-year-old John Duran for £64 million.

Should Marseille manage to sell Greenwood for a similar amount, Manchester United could potentially receive over £18 million from their sell-on agreement. The absence of interest from any Premier League clubs in acquiring Greenwood limits United’s chances of obtaining this sell-on fee, which could be crucial for enhancing Ruben Amorim’s budget in the upcoming summer transfer window.

United’s prospects likely hinge on Greenwood continuing his career abroad, with another club from either Europe or the Middle East expressing interest. His contract with Marseille is valid until 2029.
