De Ligt, Dalot and Heaven - Manchester United injury news and return dates ahead of West Ham clash

On Sunday afternoon, Manchester United will resume Premier League play when they host West Ham United at Old Trafford.

With a 4-1 victory over Athletic Bilbao on Thursday, Ruben Amorim’s team secured their spot in the Europa League final. They still have two league games left to play before facing Tottenham in the final in ten days.

The Hammers’ visit is the first of those. United wants to gain some momentum before their European final in Bilbao, but they will be facing Graham Potter’s team minus a few important players due to injury.

Here’s a look at the current United injury situation.

Diogo Dalot

Injury: calf

Dalot has missed the last four games after head coach Ruben Amorim confirmed he had suffered a muscle injury in the 1-0 defeat to Wolves last month.

As a result, Amorim said the right-back will miss United’s upcoming matches, and it remains to be seen if he will feature again this season.

Speaking almost a fortnight ago, Amorim said: “He has something in his muscle, his calf, he had a sequence of games, he played all the time, we try to manage but the players play a lot of minutes and not so ready to cope with that. Dalot felt something.

“We don’t know how long he’s going to be out. But he’s out for these next games.”

Matthijs de Ligt

Injury: knee

Amorim confirmed on Wednesday that De Ligt, who was making his first start since recovering from an ankle injury, would miss Thursday’s victory over Athletic Bilbao as well as the Hammers’ visit after being substituted out 35 minutes into United’s 4-3 loss to Brentford on Sunday due to a suspected knee issue.

Amorim said: “It is not a big issue. That is a good thing. He cannot play tomorrow and he’ll not play on Sunday but then we’ll check day by day.”

Possible return date: May 16 (Chelsea A).

Ayden Heaven

Injury: knock

After missing United’s first three games following the March international break, Heaven made a comeback to the team on the bench against Newcastle United on April 13.

However, club sources claim that he has since suffered a “small setback” and has not appeared in any of United’s matchday squads.

He was spotted training individually during the open session United hosted at Carrington on Wednesday morning and Amorim later confirmed he remains unavailable for selection.

Possible return date: unknown.

Lisandro Martinez

Injury: anterior cruciate ligament (ACL)

Martinez suffered an ACL tear during United’s 2-0 loss to Crystal Palace at Old Trafford in early February, making him a permanent absence. He had surgery shortly after, and his recuperation is going well.

Although United has not specified how long he will be out, he won’t be playing again until the end of the summer. Recovery from ACL injuries typically takes six months.

Possible return date: August.

Toby Collyer

Injury: leg

“Toby has a small issue in his leg,” said Amorim, speaking recently. “We hope to have him in a few weeks.”

Last week, he was seen practicing at Carrington, though not with the main squad, which suggests that his recuperation is doing nicely. It’s unclear, though, when he will be open for selection again.

Possible return date: unknown.

Joshua Zirkzee

Injury: hamstring.

Due to a hamstring injury, Zirkzee was substituted out of United’s 4-1 loss to Newcastle. Before leaving the pitch, he needed medical attention after pulling up abruptly.

He needed assistance from two United medical staff members, but he managed to leave the field on foot. He will now, regrettably, miss the rest of the season.

“Joshua is out for the season, so he’s not going to play any more this season,” Amorim said. “Let’s prepare him for the next one.”
