David Ornstein says Man Utd are targeting ‘phenomenal’ star who Ruben Amorim ‘loves so much’

The summer strategy of United will depend significantly on the outcome of the upcoming Europa League final against Tottenham Hotspur. Securing the trophy and qualifying for the Champions League would enhance the Red Devils’ position in the transfer market.

Conversely, should Spurs emerge victorious, United would need to depend on player departures to finance Amorim’s rebuilding efforts. While they could still manage to bring in one or two players without sales, acquiring Gyokeres would be improbable without participation in the Champions League.

David Ornstein reveals Man United retain Gyokeres interest

Arsenal seems to be leading the race to acquire Gyokeres, as the Gunners urgently require a striker after enduring a fifth consecutive season without securing a significant trophy under Mikel Arteta.
During the Sky Sports Back Pages podcast, Ornstein mentioned that Gyokeres is sought after by multiple clubs, including United.

He said: “There’s Viktor Gyokeres, who is going to be the target for many clubs. Arsenal are taking a serious look at him with their new sporting director, Andrea Berta, a big fan. [There’s] Manchester United with Ruben Amorim, who knows and loves him so much from their time together at Sporting Lisbon.”

Amorim oversaw Gyokeres’ transfer to Sporting CP in 2023, where he signed a five-year contract with the Primeira Liga club for an initial fee of £17 million.
This season, Gyokeres has achieved an extraordinary record of 38 goals in 32 league matches, totaling 52 goals in 50 appearances across all competitions, along with 13 assists. Since joining Sporting, he has made 100 appearances, netting 95 goals and providing 28 assists, establishing himself as one of the most sought-after strikers in Europe.

What Ruben Amorim has said about potential Gyokeres deal

Asked recently about a possible move for the Sweden international, United boss Amorim insisted that Champions League football should not be a deciding factor for players to move to Old Trafford.

He said: “Gyokeres deal? I didn’t talk to him. But if a player only wants to come to Man United to play Champions League, then he won’t come. We want players who want to represent United, not players who want to play certain competitions.”

This season, goals have posed a significant challenge for United, making the acquisition of a new striker a top priority for the club. Liam Delap is currently the frontrunner, given his £30m release clause and his expressed interest in joining the Red Devils.

However, should United secure the Europa League trophy by next Thursday, they may find themselves in a considerably stronger position. Recent reports indicate that Arsenal has extended an offer to Delap while also planning to pursue Gyokeres. Amorim may require more than one goal-scorer this summer, thus there is nothing preventing United from attempting to attract both Delap and Gyokeres to Old Trafford, contingent upon their success in the Europa League.

Additionally, Manchester United stands to generate significant revenue this summer, as a ‘discontented’ 23-year-old is being targeted by two Premier League competitors.
