The result of the upcoming Premier League clash between Chelsea and Manchester United could lead to a shocking scenario coming true.
On Friday, Chelsea will host their former adversaries, United, at Stamford Bridge for a Premier League match that may ultimately determine the Blues’ chances of qualifying for Champions League football in the upcoming season.
In contrast, United finds themselves in a vastly different situation, currently positioned 16th in the standings, with no objectives remaining as they hold a 17-point lead over the relegation zone with only two matches left in the season.
Nevertheless, the outcome of this match could lead to an almost unimaginable scenario, which would not bode well for United supporters. With United likely to finish anywhere from 13th to 17th in the standings, the 2024/25 season is shaping up to be the club’s most disappointing since the inception of the Premier League in 1992.
The fact that historic rivals Liverpool have secured their 20th domestic title this season, equaling United’s total, further compounds the disappointment for United fans, rendering this season one to be forgotten.
If they were to lose or draw against Chelsea on Friday, the situation would deteriorate further, as they would be assured of finishing at least 40 points behind Liverpool, marking the largest points disparity between the two clubs in history. As journalist Dominic King noted, although both teams have experienced relegation while competing in the Football League First Division, the difference in points has never exceeded 40. Presently, the points gap stands at 44, with Liverpool leading at 89 points and United languishing with a mere 39 points.
In an interview assessing United’s season, Amorim told Sky Sports: “I’m really embarrassed that in 26 games [his league games in charge], we win six, and something is wrong in the way we play football. And sometimes it’s not about how we play tactically and technically.
“It’s the way we face competition, the way we suffer, the way we get mad because we’re losing and the way we protect the goal. These things we need to improve and sometimes it’s just inside the pitch, it’s outside the pitch.
“We are in Manchester United and we don’t want to be the worst in the league.”
