Furious Ruben Amorim urges Man Utd to be ‘brave’ in summer transfer window and ditch players unwilling to fight for the club after ’embarrassing’ West Ham defeat

WHAT HAPPENED?

Graham Potter’s team outplayed United, resulting in their 17th loss of the season—the same amount of losses they suffered when they were demoted in 1974. With two games left, they were in 16th place in the Premier League, well on their way to their lowest league finish since 1974. It was also their ninth defeat in 18 home games.

WHAT AMORIM SAID

“Embarrassed and it’s hard to accept. Everybody has to think seriously about a lot of things here,” Amorim told a press conference. “We have to change a lot of things at the end of the season. The biggest concern is that feeling that ‘we cannot change and it’s ok’. We’re losing the feeling that we are a massive club and the feeling that losing at home is the worst thing in the world.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Three days had passed since United’s 4-1 thumping of Athletic Club to advance to the Europa League final, but Amorim was unimpressed by their European triumphs and scolded his team for “not having the urgency to defend our penalty area.” “I’m not worried about the final,” he continued. In our group, it’s by far the smallest issue. Something far more profound needs to change than this.
