Harry Maguire is increasingly likely to sign a new contract to remain at Manchester United beyond this season after a ‘remarkable turnaround’, according to the Daily Mail.
The England international’s deal at Old Trafford expires this summer and with no recent updates on it being extended, the expectation had been that the former Leicester City star was more likely to depart than stay in a few months’ time.
However, the 32-year-old has been a key player for Man United in their recent revival under caretaker manager Michael Carrick, which has seen them win four Premier League matches in succession to jump up into a Champions League spot in the table ahead of their trip to West Ham United on Tuesday night.
Maguire Wants to Stay at United Despite Exit Talks
According to the Daily Mail, despite the fact that Maguire has been free to talk to foreign clubs since the start of 26 with his United contract up this summer, the likelihood now is that he will stay at Old Trafford.
The Englishman has attracted interest from Serie A giants AC Milan, who made contact with his camp and United during the January transfer window.
Saudi Pro League side Al Qadsiah have also registered their interest in the 32-year-old, with their manager Brendan Rodgers keen having worked with Maguire during the duo’s time at Leicester City previously.
Despite the clamour to sign him, the £180,000-a-week defender’s preference is to remain in a red shirt beyond this season in what is described as a ‘remarkable turnaround’. He has remained loyal to United despite an up-and-down career where he has had to win back over fans and managers alike, having lost the captaincy to Bruno Fernandes during Erik ten Hag’s time in charge.
Maguire Situation Different to Casemiro’s
Some may have felt that Maguire’s United career was going the same way as teammate Casemiro’s, with the Brazilian announcing last month that he would be departing when his own contract runs out in June.
Despite the fact that the centre-back will turn 33 next month and is only one year younger than Casemiro, United see the situation with Maguire as being different.
United are expected to make a fresh offer to the England international after he established himself as a key player under Carrick alongside Lisandro Martinez at the heart of United’s defence.
Maguire is highly-rated by Carrick and has made 260 appearances in total for the Red Devils since his £80m move, scoring 17 goals.
