Man Utd duo Luke Shaw and Rasmus Hojlund in furious altercation picked up by TV cameras

Luke Shaw gave Rasmus Hojlund a dressing-down shortly before halftime in Manchester United’s match against West Ham. With pride as the only thing on the line and neither team having anything to lose at Old Trafford, United would have hoped for a quick start, but the Hammers got off to a fast start.

Tomas Soucek completed a brilliant team play by latching onto a pass from Mohamed Kudus and firing the ball in from close range. Hojlund missed an excellent opportunity to score minutes later as the home team tried to regain the lead. Ruben Amorim on the touchline gave him a disappointed look when he lost his feet and rocketed the ball over the crossbar.

For the entirety of the first half, Hojlund struggled until one of his teammates finally lost it. After the Dane lost possession of the ball, Shaw lost control and yelled at him just before the half, saying, “Ras, come on!”

It has been another rocky season for Hojlund, who has only managed four Premier League goals since the start of the campaign. He has not yet demonstrated that he is capable of leading the line for a team the size of United.

Hojlund’s frustrating display against West Ham came just days after he vowed to prove himself ‘on the biggest stage’, admitting that he has been nowhere near good enough as of late.

“I know what this football club is all about,” he said. “It’s a lot of pressure, but that’s why I’m here. I want to show myself on the biggest stage.

“There have been hard times. When I go without a goal in a lot of games, I wouldn’t say I lose self-belief, but you’re going to be a bit more down and a bit more frustrated, but then it’s about going back to the basics.

“[I need to] focus on what I can and try to improve myself, try to talk with my teammates [about] getting [into] better positions, these sort of things, but when you ride a rough spell, when you come out the other end, that absolutely makes you better.”

Reflecting on the campaign as a whole, Hojlund said: “We’re very happy about being in the [Europa League] final, but it can’t take away the focus from the entire season. Domestically it has not been good enough.

“Then again, we play to win trophies and we are in a good position to win a European one. I think we’ve been improving in the last few weeks, even though the results in the Premier League have not been overly good, just in Europe.”
