Man Utd keen to bring back free agent hailed as ‘most intelligent player’ by former manager

Manchester United are enticed by the prospect of signing their former academy player, Angel Gomes, but will likely face stern competition for his services.

The 24-year-old is an England international with Angolan and Portuguese heritage. He entered Manchester United’s academy at a young age, developing his abilities at Carrington before departing the club as a free agent in the summer of 2020.
Since that time, Gomes has been associated with LOSC Lille. The midfielder was loaned to Boavista for the 2020/21 season, after which he returned to the Ligue 1 team. The London-born player has become a key figure for the French club, with his previous manager, Paulo Fonseca, labeling him the most astute player in the squad.
Consequently, CaughtOffside reports that at least six clubs are competing for the Englishman’s signature, who will be available as a free agent this summer, including his former club, Manchester United.

Man Utd & Spurs battling for Gomes

According to the source, the Red Devils may opt to initiate a strong effort to re-sign the small-statured midfielder to Carrington.

However, Manchester United would need to contend with competition from Tottenham, which has become a significant contender in this pursuit.

Furthermore, the report identifies two additional Premier League clubs, Everton and Crystal Palace, as potential suitors, while Juventus and Napoli are mentioned as options in Serie A.

Angel Gomes enduring complicated campaign at Lille

During this season, the midfielder’s performance has been hindered by injuries, and his decision not to sign a new contract has led Lille to exclude him from their recent matches. Consequently, Gomes has participated in only 20 games this season, contributing two goals and one assist.

It is important to highlight that the England international mainly operates as an attacking midfielder, although he is capable of playing in a more defensive position. Gomes is not the only player at Lille resisting contract renewal, as his teammate Jonathan David is also preparing to pursue a new career opportunity after declining to sign an extension.
