Manchester United finally appear to be back on track after a shaky start to the season, and the form of Bryan Mbeumo has been key to that resurgence.
After an impressive few years at Brentford, Mbeumo was ready to step up and take on a new challenge this summer.
A number of clubs were keen on the Cameroon star, but it was Man Utd who won the transfer battle with a reported £71m fee agreed.
After a run of three Premier League games without a goal contribution, Mbeumo now has three goals and one assist in his last three matches, and was the star of the show in the 4-2 win over Brighton on Saturday.
Bryan Mbeumo has risen to Old Trafford challenge
He’s now got five goals in all competitions and is United’s top goalscorer this season as things stand. Suffice it to say, Mbeumo has taken to playing for a so-called Big Six club with ease, and he’s impressed both Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer in the process.
Speaking about Man United’s recent form, the legendary strikers picked out Mbeumo for praise on the latest episode of The Rest Is Football.
Lineker said: “Mbeumo, you give him time and space, and he’s going to hurt you. And I thought he played really well as well. He’s really good Mbeumo.
“I suppose the question mark against someone that’s done consistently well at a club like Brentford, with all due respect, is to then jump to one of the one of the giants in world football and be able to handle it and he clearly can. It’s not fazed him in in the slightest.”
Wayne Rooney is also happy with Mbeumo’s goalscoring record so far, as are most pundits in the game. Shearer, meanwhile, had lots to say about the partnership between Mbeumo and fellow new arrival, Matheus Cunha.
He added: “They’ve [Cunha and Mbeumo] gone there at the most difficult time as well haven’t they? I mean it’s not as if they’re going into a football club that’s flowing and winning games and all of that.
“They’ve gone into a really turbulent club that has had a really tough time and it’s it’s toughest time to go in there and perform. So yeah, he’s done really well.”
Cunha may only have one goal to his name, having opened his account this weekend, but his link-up play with Mbeumo has really opened up space for his teammate. However, it’s another United star we’re really impressed with when it comes to joining forces with Mbeumo.
Bruno Fernandes link-up is key to Mbeumo success
Most Manchester United fans will have been delighted with Bruno Fernandes’ role in Mbeumo’s second goal of the game this weekend. He may not have been credited with an assist, but the captain’s smart dummy gave Mbeumo the perfect opportunity to exploit the Brighton defence.
Fernandes said Mbeumo can follow in his footsteps at United, and Red Devils’ fans would certainly be delighted if their new man came close to emulating the Portuguese star.
He may be a controversial figure for neutrals and rivals, but Fernandes is an inspiring leader at Manchester United and he is clearly eager to help his colleagues settle in and step up to the levels demanded of any player to grace the Old Trafford turf.
One thing’s for sure, if Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and co. are going to be a success at Man United, Bruno Fernandes will have a huge role to play.
