Fabrizio Romano Issues New Update on Man Utd Sell-on Clause for Mason Greenwood

Manchester United have a 50% sell-on clause in their deal with Marseille for Mason Greenwood, GIVEMESPORT senior correspondent Fabrizio Romano has reported.

The Red Devils are in line to receive half of Greenwood’s next transfer fee if the former England international departs Marseille in the future, having inserted the clause in their agreement to sell the 24-year-old for £26.6m last year.

Romano says Greenwood was a target for several big clubs last summer, but Marseille were not keen on selling the forward, with head coach Roberto De Zerbi seeing him as a crucial player in the squad.

Greenwood, who made 129 senior appearances for Man United before leaving, is under contract with Marseille until the summer of 2029.

Man Utd Retain Major Greenwood Windfall

Romano, speaking on his YouTube channel, revealed that Man United inserted a 50% sell-on clause in the deal to sell Greenwood to Marseille in 2024, which could prove important in terms of Financial Fair Play:

“For Mason Greenwood, Man United have already received some money, it was around 25 million euros, to sell the player to Marseille, but they negotiated a 50% sell-on clause for Mason Greenwood.

“So in case of a future sale of Mason Greenwood, Man United will receive 50% of the transfer fee, so they still control 50% and could be big money if and when Marseille decide to sell Greenwood.

“Already last summer, there were clubs prepared to pay big money for Mason Greenwood. And Marseille said: ‘No, the player is here, he’s too important.’

“This was the decision of the president, Pablo Longoria, of the director, Mehdi Benatia, showing ambition, and also of the coach, Roberto De Zerbi, who considers Mason Greenwood as a crucial player.

“But remember, if Greenwood leaves one day, Man United will have a 50% sell-on clause. So more money is coming, and that could be really important in terms of Financial Fair Play and future signings for Manchester United.”

Greenwood finished last season as Ligue 1’s joint top goalscorer along with Paris Saint-Germain star Ousmane Dembele, netting 21 times in 34 appearances.

The 24-year-old forward has six goals and three assists in eight league games this term and two goal involvements in the Champions League, where Marseille have three points after three games.

Man United’s summer business saw Ruben Amorim reshuffle his forward options, with the likes of Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, Alejandro Garnacho leaving, while Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko joined.

The Red Devils are ninth in the Premier League after eight games, with 13 points from a possible 24.
