Manchester United have a genuine interest in signing Real Madrid attacker Rodrygo this summer and held exploratory talks with his representatives last month, according to journalist and transfer insider Ben Jacobs.
The Red Devils are keen to strengthen their attack ahead of the new season and have all but conceded the race for Athletic Bilbao star Nico Williams, who looks set to join Barcelona. Rodrygo has now emerged as a potential target, especially with uncertainty surrounding his future at Madrid following a managerial change that saw Xabi Alonso replace Carlo Ancelotti.
Real Madrid are reportedly demanding around €90 million (£77 million) for the Brazilian, a fee that could prove too steep for United. The club is prioritizing the acquisition of a natural number 9 and may be reluctant to invest such a significant portion of their budget on a player who primarily operates as a left winger, despite Rodrygo’s versatility and ability to play centrally.
While Rodrygo could provide an upgrade on current options like Marcus Rashford or Alejandro Garnacho in wide areas, Manchester United may hesitate to meet Madrid’s valuation. The 24-year-old ended last season with 17 goals and nine assists across 51 appearances and remains one of the most exciting attacking talents in world football.
Should a deal materialize, Rodrygo’s creativity, pace, and flair could energize the Old Trafford faithful and significantly boost United’s goal output. However, a transfer is likely to depend on Madrid’s willingness to negotiate a lower fee.
Manager Amorin is pushing for quality reinforcements in every area of the squad after a disappointing campaign, and sporting director Wilcox is overseeing what’s expected to be a busy summer window. United are yet to make a signing since the transfer window reopened yesterday for its second phase but are looking to act swiftly to avoid another underwhelming start to the season.
