Sporting CP boss dodges question on Morten Hjulmand’s future, amid Man Utd links

Sporting CP manager Rui Borges has responded to rumours linking Morten Hjulmand with a move to Manchester United, which could see him reunite with Ruben Amorim.

The midfield department will be a priority position for Manchester United in 2026. Still, it remains to be seen if there will be any additions in January or whether the club will wait until the summer.

United have agreed to sign wonderkid Cristian Orozco, but like Diego Leon, he is considered a player for the future.

This has led to United being linked with a range of midfield options, some of whom currently play in the Premier League. Brighton’s Carlos Baleba is a target following a failed pursuit in the summer, while Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton continues to be linked.

However, United’s search is not exclusive to the Premier League, with Ruben Amorim possibly considering a move for one of his former players at Sporting CP.

Amorim has persisted with a midfield pivot of Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro this season, but with both players in their 30s, it’s time to consider replacement options.

Rui Borges not worried about Man Utd interest in Morten Hjulmand

One player who has been consistently linked with a move to United over the past 11 months is Morten Hjulmand.

The 26-year-old was one of Amorim’s star players at Sporting CP, and he remains captain of the club under Borges.

Sporting CP beat Marseille 2-1 in the Champions League on Wednesday night, but before the match, Borges was questioned about United buying Hjulmand in January.

The Denmark international was linked with a move to Old Trafford in the summer, but a deal never materialised.

Borges was asked whether these rumours were causing issues with Hjulmand’s form.

“A lot of questions [laughs]… We don’t have any tears, unlike last season. Muscle tears,” Borges told A Bola.

“Hjulmand is Hjulmand. Our leader, captain. He won’t always be at his best, but he’s always important. He demands of himself and his teammates every day. As for United, it’s October, and I’m focused on Marseille.”

Borges’ comments will do anything but quench rumours surrounding Hjulmand’s future.

Four players Man Utd signed from Sporting CP

United have signed four players directly from Sporting CP in the past, while selling one player to the Portuguese club.

Cristiano Ronaldo was the first recruit from Sporting CP in 2003, and he was followed by Luis Nani in 2007.

Marcos Rojo and Fernandes would later join United from Sporting CP.

The only player to sign for Sporting CP directly from United is former goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel.
