Manchester United Suffer Major Setback as Viktor Gyökeres Reportedly Rejects Move to Old Trafford

Manchester United’s hopes of landing Viktor Gyökeres appear to have taken a significant hit, as fresh reports out of Portugal suggest the prolific striker has turned down a move to Old Trafford. The 27-year-old, who has emerged as one of Europe’s most sought-after forwards, has reportedly opted against joining the Red Devils this summer, delivering a serious blow to INEOS’s transfer plans.

Gyökeres has been a standout performer since making the switch to Sporting CP, scoring goals at a remarkable rate and helping the club to domestic success. His rise to prominence has not gone unnoticed, with a host of top European clubs — including Arsenal, Chelsea, and Manchester United — monitoring his progress closely. The Swedish international has found the back of the net 97 times in 102 appearances for the Lisbon side, showcasing both consistency and clinical finishing in front of goal.

United had identified Gyökeres as a primary target as part of manager Ruben Amorim’s plan to inject fresh energy into the squad’s attack. The Portuguese tactician, who previously coached Sporting, is familiar with the player’s attributes and was reportedly eager to reunite with him at Old Trafford. Gyökeres’ ability to press high, hold up play, and score from a variety of positions made him an ideal fit for Amorim’s system.

However, according to multiple sources in the Portuguese media, the forward has now rejected the opportunity to join Manchester United. While the specific reasons for his decision remain unclear, speculation suggests the player may have concerns about the current direction of the club, or perhaps prefers a project with more immediate Champions League prospects. Arsenal, who have also shown interest, may be viewed as a more attractive destination due to their recent stability and consistent presence in Europe’s elite competition.

This latest twist in the transfer saga will come as a major frustration to United’s recruitment team and INEOS, who are overseeing their first full transfer window since assuming sporting control. With goals hard to come by last season — United managed just 44 goals in 38 Premier League matches — the need for a reliable striker is paramount. Gyökeres was seen as a ready-made solution, capable of leading the line and delivering 20+ goals per season.

It had previously been reported that Gyökeres had a gentleman’s agreement with Sporting CP to leave this summer should a club meet his release clause, which is believed to be around €70 million (£59 million). United were reportedly willing to meet that valuation, but the player’s decision to turn them down has forced the club to reconsider their options.

The setback is likely to prompt United to accelerate their interest in alternative targets. Victor Osimhen of Napoli — who is also reportedly on the move following a breakdown in relations with the Italian club — remains on the radar. Other options could include Rasmus Højlund-style younger talents or experienced names seeking a new challenge.

Sporting, for their part, may still lose Gyökeres this summer, but his rejection of United indicates the striker is carefully considering his next step rather than jumping at the first offer. Whether another Premier League club or a European giant steps in with an offer that matches both Sporting’s valuation and the player’s ambition remains to be seen.

For Manchester United, though, it’s back to the drawing board. The club’s hunt for a top-tier striker continues, but with the rejection from Gyökeres now public, the pressure is on to deliver a suitable alternative before the window progresses much further.
