Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel was full of joy as he watched his former side beat Liverpool at Anfield in the Premier League.
After nearly a decade of misery at Anfield, Manchester United beat Liverpool 2-1 on Sunday afternoon in the 100th meeting between the two clubs on Merseyside.
Harry Maguire will steal the headlines after scoring the winner late on, months after he missed a huge opportunity to score the winner at Anfield last season.
He was one of several standout players, alongside summer signing Senne Lammens who was compared to Peter Schmeichel after his impressive start at United.
Peter Schmeichel met Lammens before kick-off and watched the victory at Anfield, but after the full-time whistle there was another United star he couldn’t stop praising.
Peter Schmeichel wants captaincy change at Man United
Amorim made a bold call to start Maguire against Liverpool, with the United boss wanting to rely on his experienced players in a hostile environment.
Maguire rose to the occasion, and his winning goal brings him a step closer to “hero” status among supporters.
For Schmeichel, it seems he is already there. Speaking to ViaPlay, the United legend said: “I’m so happy for Harry Maguire. He has become a fringe player, but he’s starting this game, which is for me the biggest game.
“For me, he is the only true Manchester United player in there. There’s a lot close to him, but this guy defends like a proper defender.
“He leads all the time, talks to all the players. He steps up when needed, and this goal today I’m so happy for him and the team.
“I could kiss Ruben Amorim.
“I can’t praise him enough, I want Maguire to play every game, I want him to be captain. He has every attribute of a good Manchester United leader.”
Harry Maguire has earned new Man United deal
Maguire’s current contract expires at the end of the season, but even at 32 years old, he is proving to be a crucial member of Amorim’s squad.
Before the October international break, reports strongly suggested that Maguire is in talks for a new deal.
With a winning goal at Anfield now under his belt, it feels inevitable that he will extend his stay at Old Trafford, taking his stay at the club to over six years.
