Since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013 – and with it, the end of a reign of terror that took Manchester United to the summit of English football with 13 Premier League titles in 26 years – the Red Devils have been caught in the trance of a never-ending cycle. Under Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his INEOS entourage, that reckless trial-and-error philosophy appeared to persist. Barely a week into this summer’s transfer window, however, United’s early dealings suggest a shift in approach – marked by clearer intent, structure, and a sense of genuine purpose. Perhaps, at long last, the winds of positive change are beginning to blow through the Theatre of Dreams.
Of course, for those of an Old Trafford persuasion, it’s far too early to get carried away, especially after last season’s somber 15th-place finish – a reminder that the road to redemption is as long as it is winding. Still, a glimpse at the potential lineup for 2025/26 might just be enough to bring a few cautious smiles.

In Ruben Amorim’s 3-4-3 system, the wide midfielders must possess the engine to attack and defend in equal measure, making them arguably the most vital cogs in the machine. In Amad and Patrick Dorgu, the Red Devils may have found just that. While Dorgu has occasionally come under fire for appearing a touch raw, there’s no denying he has the right ingredients for success in the new era: energy, determination, and most importantly, heart.
As for Amad, caution has never been in his vocabulary. At various flashpoints during his United tenure, he’s looked like his side’s best player. With 10 goals and 11 assists across all competitions last season, he trailed only Bruno Fernandes in terms of creative output – a remarkable feat as the captain has once again pledged his loyalty to M16, rebuffing lucrative offers from Saudi Arabia this summer.
Creatively, United still revolve around Fernandes. No player has created more chances in the Premier League over the past two seasons. And while his vision has often gone unrewarded thanks to a misfiring frontline, the tide may be turning judging by the reinforcements coming in. Anchoring the midfield, Casemiro looks set to reprise his role as the enforcer-in-chief – a role he reminded everyone he still excels in after storming back into the first-team fold earlier this year with shades of the beast he once was at Real Madrid as he started each of United’s Europa League knockout matches.
