Cristiano Ronaldo Breaks Silence on Manchester United and Rúben Amorim
Cristiano Ronaldo has finally spoken out about the changes at Manchester United and the club’s bold decision to appoint Portuguese manager Rúben Amorim as head coach. The five-time Ballon d’Or winner, who had a dramatic and well-documented exit from Old Trafford in 2022, has surprised many with his measured and respectful remarks about the club’s new direction.
In an interview with Portuguese outlet Record, Ronaldo acknowledged that Manchester United is in a transitional period, but he expressed cautious optimism about the appointment of Amorim, who has earned plaudits for his innovative tactics and man-management skills at Sporting CP.
“Rúben is a very intelligent coach,” Ronaldo said. “He did great things in Portugal with limited resources. If United give him the time and support, he could bring something fresh and exciting to the Premier League.”
While Ronaldo did not shy away from hinting at past frustrations during his second spell at the club, he emphasized that his criticisms were never directed at the fans or the club’s identity, but rather the lack of structure and ambition at the time.
“My love for Manchester United will never fade,” he added. “I have great memories, and I want to see the club succeed—even if I’m not part of it anymore.”
Ronaldo’s comments are particularly notable given the tension that surrounded his departure under Erik ten Hag’s management. His praise of Amorim—another Portuguese national—suggests that he sees potential for cultural alignment and tactical renewal at the club, especially as United aims to rediscover their attacking DNA.
He also offered some advice to United’s younger stars, particularly Rasmus Højlund and the new wave of attacking signings including Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo:
“Hard work, humility, and discipline—that’s the way forward. Manchester United needs leaders on and off the pitch now more than ever.”
Cristiano’s input, though from afar, may be just what United fans needed to hear as they prepare for what could be a defining season under Amorim. And while a return to Old Trafford is unlikely, his legacy remains deeply tied to the club’s past—and perhaps, its future inspiration.
