Two reports have illuminated the potential timeline for Manchester United to dismiss Ruben Amorim, with the often-criticized Gareth Southgate emerging as an early frontrunner for the managerial position.
Amorim’s role as the manager of Manchester United is already facing scrutiny. The Red Devils have secured only one victory in the Premier League this season and were eliminated from the League Cup by the fourth-tier team Grimsby Town.
During the summer, Amorim was permitted to recruit an entirely new attacking lineup along with a new goalkeeper. Over £200 million was invested; however, there are no indications of improvement, at least in terms of results, thus far.
The Portuguese manager has committed to never altering his tactics, formation, or philosophy, a position that is attracting severe criticism as his strategies are evidently ineffective at this moment.
The vast majority of media outlets are reporting that Amorim still enjoys the support of Manchester United’s management.
The Manchester Evening News is among these sources, as is Sky Sports, which reported that United officials believe the club was merely unfortunate to suffer a 3-0 defeat against Manchester City last weekend.
Recent updates from The Mirror and Daily Mail both emphasized that Amorim is secure in his position for the time being. However, these reports also indicate when that situation might change.
Initially, The Mirror noted that Amorim ‘effectively has three games to preserve his job as the manager of Manchester United.’
These three matches are against Chelsea, Brentford, and Sunderland, encompassing Manchester United’s entire schedule until the next international break.
The report further stated: ‘Although the United management maintains that Amorim has their full support and there are no intentions to replace him, it is understood that they will evaluate the situation and the team’s trajectory following their next three matches.’
They emphasized that Manchester United will be liable for a £12 million compensation payment to Amorim if he is dismissed prior to his one-year anniversary with the club.
Amorim officially entered into his contract with Manchester United on November 1 of the previous year. Consequently, the Mail strongly indicated that Manchester United is unlikely to make a decision regarding Amorim’s future before November 1, 2025.
This implies that Amorim will continue until the next international break and will oversee United’s matches against Liverpool (October 19) and Brighton (October 25). Nottingham Forest is scheduled to play on November 1.
Should a dismissal occur, Crystal Palace’s Oliver Glasner and Gareth Southgate are currently the two leading candidates favored by bookmakers to replace Amorim as of the time this article was published.
Close behind is Aston Villa’s Unai Emery, whom Football Insider reported that Manchester United has a legitimate and increasing interest in.
