‘This can’t continue…’ – David Ornstein shares late-night verdict on Amorim’s future at Man Utd

Manchester United’s manager, Ruben Amorim, has not had the desired success during his tenure; however, individuals associated with the club are eager to highlight that their performance metrics have improved, as reported by David Ornstein.

The beginning of the 2025/2026 season has been underwhelming, culminating in their elimination from the Carabao Cup after a penalty shootout against League Two team Grimsby Town. In the Premier League, the Red Devils have secured only one victory out of four matches, and that lone win was a lackluster display against the newly promoted Burnley.

In their most recent match, United suffered a defeat at the hands of their rivals, Manchester City, with a scoreline of three goals to nil. While a loss was somewhat anticipated, the performance exhibited by Amorim’s team was particularly disappointing. The manager’s refusal to alter his tactical approach is increasingly frustrating fans, as he continues to defend his strategy in the media.

David Ornstein: Ruben Amorim Update at Man Utd

Speaking on the Back Pages podcast, Ornstein has suggested that speaking to people around Manchester United, they are quick to point out that their performance metrics are up this season. The respecter reporter goes on to add that they aren’t doing nearly enough, and their performances can’t continue like this, but he doesn’t expect them to change their manager as it stands…

“Well, it hasn’t gone to plan is an understatement. Not even a year since he was appointed, and things are looking bleak again. It’s a bit of a sense of Groundhog Day. When you speak to people around United, they’re very keen and quick to point out that the performance metrics are up. There’s a piece by Martin Samuel in The Times that sort of makes a bit of a mockery of that, because it’s these results, it’s putting the ball in the back of the net, and they’re not doing that nearly enough. I think it’s logical to understand that this can’t continue. I don’t know about a set number of games. I don’t think United are minded to be changing manager again already.”

There’s no doubt Amorim’s side will need to show vast improvement in recent weeks if the United manager is going to keep his job, but his position doesn’t appear to be under threat at the moment. Whether that’s the right decision remains to be seen, but it will be interesting to see if INEOS’ stance changes if they fail to beat Chelsea, Sunderland and Brentford, who they will play over the next few weeks.
