Manchester United were thoroughly outperformed at the Etihad Stadium, with two goals from Erling Haaland and one from Phil Foden leading to the Red Devils’ drop to 14th place in the Premier League.
Manager Ruben Amorim opted to start Altay Bayindir in goal, leaving the transfer deadline day acquisition Senne Lammens on the bench.
Following Man City’s third goal, Mbeumo was observed urging Bayindir to maintain his composure – a rare display of defiance amidst an otherwise bleak performance.
In a post on X, Steven Railson from the Manchester Evening News remarked: “Mbeumo has just been yelling at Bayindir while waiting to restart. He is trying to encourage the goalkeeper to keep his spirits up.”
This outcome leaves Amorim with only one victory from Manchester United’s initial four league matches. His team has recorded a single draw and two losses, with mounting pressure surrounding his position less than a year into his tenure.
Arguably the most significant setback occurred during Manchester United’s loss to Grimsby Town in the Carabao Cup, where the League Two underdogs eliminated Amorim’s team from the domestic competition at the very first stage.
Mbeumo joined Old Trafford earlier this summer for £71 million, joining forces with other new attacking recruits such as Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko.
Manchester United will next face Chelsea on September 20, and supporters will be hoping that Amorim can rectify the situation before their encounter with league leaders Liverpool on October 19.
