Wayne Rooney has called on Ruben Amorim to modify his tactical strategy at Manchester United and to adjust his formation according to the opponents they encounter.
The Portuguese head coach is facing renewed scrutiny regarding his position at Old Trafford following a decisive defeat to Man City over the weekend. This loss signifies that United has experienced their poorest start to a new league season since 1992, accumulating only four points from their first four matches of the season.
Amorim also possesses the undesirable distinction of having the lowest win rate of any permanent United manager since World War Two, having secured merely 31 points from 31 Premier League matches. Should this performance persist throughout an entire league season, United would find themselves in a serious relegation struggle by the conclusion of the season.
The head coach of United has faced significant criticism for his tactical decisions and his perceived inflexibility in not altering their formation, irrespective of the opposition. Amorim has consistently argued that there is excessive media attention on his formation, asserting that, due to the dynamic nature of football, they frequently adjust their shape during matches.
In the aftermath of the derby loss to Man City, Amorim reaffirmed his commitment to his philosophy at United, although club icon Rooney contends that he must adapt if he wishes to retain his position.
While his 3-4-2-1 formation may be effective against specific opponents, Rooney argues that there are numerous instances where United should utilize three central midfielders to ensure they can compete effectively with the majority of teams that also employ a three-man midfield.
“In quite a lot of league seasons that is relegation form,” he told the Wayne Rooney show. “What is important when you’re trying to implement a new style is you win games as well while you’re doing that.”
“I have had my time as a manager, and I know how it works, and I know how it is when someone else looks and critiques your formation. I can understand that, but it is so obvious,” Rooney added. “If you’re struggling, you have to put three in midfield and give yourself a chance to compete.”
