Video: “I expect great things”: Ex-United star predicts new summer signing will light up the Manchester Derby

The aspirations of Manchester United supporters globally are now placed on the young shoulders of Benjamin Sesko as the Manchester Derby approaches.

Last season, the Red Devils struggled to find the back of the net, concluding the Premier League season with a mere 44 goals in 38 matches. It is hardly surprising that they ended up in 15th place in the league standings.

To resolve their scoring issues, the English giants made a significant investment to acquire Sesko from RB Leipzig this summer.

However, the Slovenia international has had a sluggish beginning to the new season and has yet to make a start in the Premier League.

Sesko yet to get going

Sesko joined Ruben Amorim’s squad just ahead of the start of the season.

Having missed pre-season training with his new team, the Portuguese head coach has opted to take things slow with the 22 year old so far.

The Slovenian is yet to register a goal or an assist from 170 minutes of first team action, further adding to fans’ woes.

With United playing Manchester City at the Etihad on Sunday, September 14, though, Sesko now has the chance to prove his mettle.

An opportunity to endear himself to fans

While Sesko hasn’t found the back of the net for his new team this season, all will be forgiven if the youngster can make his presence felt against Pep Guardiola’s team.

Speaking recently to Sky Sports, former United striker Louis Saha also pointed out that the game was an opportunity for the Slovenian to shine.

Asked if Sesko would start this weekend’s game, the Frenchman responded: “I think so, yes. When you look at such a big fixture, you think that’s a great platform for having a game without massive pressure.

“You know that you are facing great defenders, you have great qualities, you’ve been bought because of your quality.

“This is an opportunity for him to shine; this is definitely a game where he can try, he can run, and make sure that he can show his quality. He’s playing with a bit of expectation, but that’s not the worry of a striker.

“You need to create chances, you need to be in the right position, and I think he’s shown that in a few games that he’s been involved. So I can expect great things from him.”

United also signed Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo to revamp their faltering attack this summer. Cunha has been lively, while Mbeumo has already scored two goals in four games.

Fans were hoping to see the trio start together for the first time at this weekend’s Manchester Derby. However, Amorim has confirmed that Cunha will miss the game after picking up an injury against Burnley.
