Manchester United are contemplating the acquisition of a seasoned goalkeeper in January and have reportedly identified AC Milan’s Mike Maignan as a possible target, as stated by the Spanish publication Fichajes.
The Old Trafford club is said to be ready to implement another change in goal at the beginning of the year if late summer signing Senne Lammens fails to establish himself as a starter in the upcoming months.
United secured Lammens on a five-year contract from Belgian club Royal Antwerp on transfer deadline day, with the 23-year-old goalkeeper taking the place of Andre Onana, who has subsequently been loaned to Turkish club Trabzonspor.
Lammens appears poised to vie with Altay Bayindir for a position in Ruben Amorim’s starting eleven this season, with the Turkey international having started each of United’s first three Premier League matches this season, during which he conceded four goals.
Bayindir is expected to retain his position in the starting lineup for the Manchester derby on Sunday, with Amorim confirming that Lammens will have to wait for his debut until at least next weekend’s home match against Chelsea.
Man United Eyeing Mike Maignan
As reported by Fichajes, United is set to keep a close watch on the goalkeeper market in anticipation of January, considering both Maignan and Emiliano Martinez from Aston Villa as viable candidates, both of whom would offer significant experience.
Currently, Martinez, who was targeted during the summer transfer window, appears to be the preferred choice, although Maignan’s circumstances in Milan render him an appealing budget-friendly option, especially since the French goalkeeper has less than a year remaining on his contract at San Siro.
Maignan made the move to Milan from Lille in 2021 and has since proven himself to be among the top goalkeepers globally, playing a crucial role in the Rossoneri’s Serie A victory in the 2021/22 season.
The ‘world-class’ 30-year-old has achieved 61 clean sheets in 166 matches for the Italian club thus far, including 13 in the previous league season, which placed him joint-fourth in the competition for the Serie A golden glove.
During the summer transfer window, United invested over £200 million on new acquisitions, which included three new forwards: Benjamin Sesko, Matheus Cunha, and Bryan Mbeumo.
The Red Devils also released several first-team players, with Alejandro Garnacho and Antony leaving permanently, while Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, and Rasmus Hojlund were sent out on loan.
