Manchester United are of the belief they have acquired ‘one of the best’ young shot-stoppers in world football.
On the deadline day last Monday, the Red Devils finalized the acquisition of Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp in a deal worth £18.2 million.
The 23-year-old experienced a whirlwind day following the acceptance of United’s bid, which led to him being quickly dispatched on a flight to Manchester to undergo his medical examination and sign a five-year contract.
Having been omitted from Belgium’s squad for their World Cup qualifiers during the break, Lammens has had the opportunity to remain at Carrington, getting accustomed to his new environment and training in preparation for his first appearance for the club.
It remains uncertain whether this debut will occur this Sunday during the first Manchester derby of the season, as it would undoubtedly present a challenging introduction for any young player transitioning to the Premier League.
How Senne Lammens’ Old Trafford switch came to fruition
Following the lackluster performances of Altay Bayindir and Andre Onana in the initial matches of the season, United swiftly implemented a strategy to pursue a new goalkeeper during the final moments of the summer transfer window.
They even reached an agreement on personal terms with Emiliano Martinez, who was eager to join Old Trafford – to the extent that he was reportedly in frequent communication with fellow countryman Lisandro Martinez to inquire about United’s position.
However, the board ultimately decided against moving forward with the 33-year-old Martinez, opting instead for the younger alternative, Lammens.
As a result, the Argentine veteran remained at Villa Park, while Lammens bid farewell to his teammates and club staff at Antwerp.
United have full faith in young Lammens
“I think Manchester United really trust him (Lammens) for the present and also for the future. They believe that this is one of the best young goalkeepers in the world,” Fabrizio Romano told GiveMeSport.
“They wanted Lammens strongly and they decided to go for him because they believe he’s the solution for the present and future, and I’m sure that Lammens has very good chances to be the starting goalkeeper at Manchester United.”
