Wayne Rooney’s warning to son Kai as he says ‘life can’t get worse’ in heartbreaking update

Wayne Rooney once acknowledged that it is premature to rely on his aspiring footballer son, Kai, to turn professional for Manchester United. This statement was made prior to Kai, aged 15, sharing a distressing update after suffering an injury, in which he expressed, “life can’t get worse”.

Since joining United’s academy at the age of 11 in 2020, Rooney junior has had significant expectations to meet, considering his father is regarded as one of the greatest English footballers in history and the club’s all-time leading goal scorer.

Nevertheless, the young player reportedly netted 56 goals during his inaugural season with the Red Devils. He has followed in his father’s footsteps by primarily playing in a central role, while also making contributions in wider positions, which has led to comparisons with the United icon.

Kai’s progress through the youth system recently earned him a call-up to the United-19s squad, where he competed alongside other prospects who are four years his senior. His selection was shortly followed by a delightful goal he scored for the Under-18s, executing a left-footed volley that found the top corner.

However, the teenager’s upward trajectory has now faced a significant setback. This week, Kai took to Instagram to share a mirror selfie depicting him on crutches, with a protective boot on his right foot.

In the caption overlaying the image, he stated: “Life can’t get worse,” accompanied by a crying emoji, indicating that he has sustained a serious injury while participating in United’s development team.

The tone of his post indicates that it may be quite some time before he returns to playing for United. Although he has not yet captured the spotlight in the same manner as his legendary father did when he made his debut at Everton at the age of 16, Kai’s skills and playing style certainly evoke memories of his renowned father during his prime at Old Trafford.

However, Rooney has been proactive in alleviating any pressure from his son by taking a measured approach, consistently emphasizing that it is premature to determine whether Kai will succeed and cautioning him that a lengthy journey lies ahead.

Even prior to the injury, the 39-year-old aimed to keep Kai grounded and prevent him from becoming overly optimistic. In a conversation with Gary Neville, he remarked: “[He has] my physique, but he’ll be taller than me and he’s a goal scorer, he’s in the box, he sniffs chances out and that’s his game, so he’s doing okay.”

United legend Neville then inquired: “Obviously you can’t remember yourself, but is he at that sort of level where you think he’s got a chance, or is it too early?”

Rooney responded: “I think it’s too early, you never know. I think he’s showing potential and good signs. So, obviously, he’ll be at United now for the next two years, and that’s when they make decisions on you, so just wait and see.”
