United on red-alert after 22-yo midfield maestro’s price tag is slashed in half with “agreement” already struck – report

All indications suggest that Manchester United is poised to make investments in their midfield in 2026.

The Red Devils are emerging from a successful summer, during which the primary emphasis was placed on enhancing a struggling attack.

The Premier League powerhouses made significant investments in Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha, and Benjamin Sesko to rectify this concern.

Diego Leon was brought in to bolster the wing positions, while Ruben Amorim also secured Senne Lammens on the deadline day. The Belgian goalkeeper is anticipated to assume the role of the new No. 1 at Old Trafford.

United were also anticipated to acquire a new midfielder this summer. The Red Devils were associated with several prominent players, including Javi Guerra from Valencia, but an agreement did not come to fruition.

Guerra has been quite impressive so far

Guerra has attracted attention with Valencia in recent seasons and aligns with the profile that Amorim seeks in midfield.

The Spaniard serves as a dominant figure in the center of the field, infusing the team with energy and momentum. He excels in both offensive and defensive aspects of the game, which has garnered him fans at Old Trafford.

It seems that United aimed to capitalize on the player’s contract impasse during the summer. Reports indicated that the Premier League club had even reached an agreement on personal terms with the 22-year-old in anticipation of a transfer.

Nevertheless, the transfer did not come to fruition, as Guerra opted to sign a new contract extending to 2029 in August.

The Spaniard is expected to remain on Amorim’s radar in 2026 as well. However, it now seems that Real Madrid may disrupt United’s intentions.

Guerra is wanted at the Santiago Bernabeu

According to a report in Spain, as relayed by TEAMtalk,  Los Blancos have put chief scout Juni Calafat on Guerra’s case as they plan a move next year.

The Spanish midfielder has a €100m release clause in his contract. However, given Valencia’s poor finances, a deal could be possible for half that amount, the report details.

Interestingly, Real Madrid may not be too keen to invest such a big amount in the young midfielder.

A separate report from the same publication adds that Los Blancos are likely to propose a swap deal between Guerra and Dani Ceballos.

However, it is believed that Valencia would prefer to raise funds from the sale instead, which could work to United’s advantage if INEOS are willing to snatch a highly-rated young talent from the jaws of the Spanish giant again.
