Manchester United could offload a third player to Turkey in efforts to further trim Ruben Amorim’s squad.
The English transfer window concluded on September 1, with United successfully transferring several key members of their ‘bomb squad’, including Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, Antony, and Alejandro Garnacho.
However, there remains ongoing activity at Old Trafford, as efforts continue to offload additional players considered surplus to the manager’s requirements, with Turkey emerging as a favored destination since their transfer window remains open until Friday.
Andre Onana is set to join Trabzonspor on loan until the season’s conclusion, having been informed that he is the third choice behind Senne Lammens and Altay Bayindir at Old Trafford.
Tyrell Malacia, who is also part of the group excluded from the first team during the summer, is currently in discussions to join Eyupspor after a last-minute transfer to the Spanish club Elche fell through.
United is also attempting to transfer academy graduate Sam Mather, who has garnered interest from clubs in Turkey, as reported by the Manchester Evening News.
Clubs in Sweden and Germany have also shown interest; however, with their respective transfer windows closed, the Turkish Super Lig presents an immediate opportunity for first-team football.
Mather, 21, spent the latter half of last season on loan at League Two club Tranmere Rovers.
While Amorim has often relied on United’s academy to strengthen his squad during training and matches, Mather has not been on his radar, having also been excluded from the pre-season tour in the US.
Playing in attacking midfield or on the wings, the Salford-born talent faces significant competition for a first-team opportunity, with Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, Mason Mount, Amad Diallo, Kobbie Mainoo, and Bruno Fernandes all competing for a place in the lineup.
Amorim has been eager to eliminate negative influences from his squad this summer, with the United manager perceiving Onana’s forthcoming departure as a significant achievement in purging the team of ‘bad apples’, according to one report.
The Cameroon international missed the entire pre-season campaign after suffering a hamstring injury in his second day back at training – something his manager felt could have been avoided.
The relationship between Onana and Amorim deteriorated to the extent where the goalkeeper ‘effectively refused to acknowledge his manager in training’ with the United boss more than happy to approve his exit.
