Manchester United are in the market for a new striker and Wayne Rooney has named the player who should join the club
Wayne Rooney possesses considerable expertise in scoring goals, having established himself as Manchester United’s all-time leading goal-scorer with 253 goals across 559 matches.
He remains the only player in the club’s history to exceed the 250-goal threshold. Additionally, Rooney was once England’s top goal-scorer, netting 53 goals in 120 appearances, a record now surpassed by Harry Kane, who has scored 71 goals for the national team.
In a recent episode of The Overlap Fan Debate with Jamie Carragher, Rooney praised Kane’s abilities and expressed his belief that had Kane continued in the Premier League, he would undoubtedly have surpassed Alan Shearer’s record of 260 goals. Rooney remarked, ‘If Harry had stayed in the Premier League, he’d break Shearer’s record for sure.’
Wayne Rooney says Harry Kane should join Manchester United
The former Tottenham Hotspur player has scored 213 goals in the Premier League, making him the second highest scorer since the league’s rebranding. He transferred to Bayern Munich in the summer of 2023 and recently celebrated his first trophy as Vincent Kompany’s team was declared Bundesliga champions.
Manchester United had shown interest in Kane prior to his transfer to Bayern; however, a deal was never pursued as Spurs chairman Daniel Levy was reluctant to sell his key player to a direct competitor. When asked by Rooney if Kane’s career trajectory might have been different had he joined United, Rooney responded, ‘He still can, he still should.’
Further expressing his admiration for Kane, Rooney remarked, ‘I have great respect for Harry. As a goalscorer, he has developed his game significantly in recent years, as evidenced by his ability to drop deeper, his impressive passing range, and his capacity to score from long distances.’
Could Man United land Harry Kane this summer?
Liam Delap, Viktor Gyökeres, and Victor Osimhen are three forwards rumored to be potential signings for Old Trafford this summer. Delap may be available for approximately £30 million, while the other two would exceed £60 million. Acquiring targets like Gyökeres and Osimhen is likely contingent upon Manchester United qualifying for the Champions League by winning the Europa League.
Harry Kane, who turns 32 this summer, continues to perform at a high level, having netted 36 goals and provided 12 assists for Bayern this season. As reported by talkSPORT, he has a release clause of £67 million, which will decrease to £54 million for English clubs in January. This release clause positions him at a similar price point to Gyökeres and Osimhen. Alex Crook, the transfer correspondent for talkSPORT, suggests that Kane will remain with Bayern for an additional season before aiming for a return to the Premier League.
He stated: ‘I believe he will spend one more year at Bayern, attempting to defend the title and make another attempt at the Champions League. Following that, I think he will likely focus on returning to the Premier League to surpass Shearer’s goalscoring record.’
In order for United to have a realistic opportunity to acquire Kane, they must significantly enhance their performance in domestic competitions. Securing victory in the Europa League could provide a substantial advantage to their rebuilding efforts under Ruben Amorim, thereby making the club a more appealing option for prospective players in the future. This outcome would ultimately fulfill Rooney’s desire to see Kane don a United jersey.
