Ruben Amorim’s squad selections have come under the scanner this season, and respected journalist Andy Mitten has shared that he’s been told the ‘best’ Man Utd player at his position is yet to play this season.
When Andre Onana was left out of the starting lineup, the story of Ruben Amorim’s squad selections began.
As a result of the pain caused by her diminished role, Kobbie Mainoo requested a loan move away close to the deadline.
The ongoing selection of Mason Mount at the expense of Benjamin Sesko then came into focus, and Andy Mitten has now revealed an insider update from the team stating that the “best” Manchester United player in his position hasn’t even shown up yet!
Andy Mitten on Man Utd’s goalkeeping situation
It is hoped that the goalkeeping position would stabilize a little now that Senne Lammens, an exciting young player, has been signed and Andre Onana is leaving for Trabzonspor.
Altay Bayindir hasn’t wowed either, while Lammens is still viewed as a project player who requires time.
Amorim has been urged to give third-choice goalkeeper Tom Heaton, who showed promise in preseason, a shot in these situations.
Despite mistakes by Bayindir and Onana, Heaton has not been given consideration for selection, and Lammens’ presence probably means the door is closed entirely.
It shouldn’t have been, if Mitten is correct, as he said on the Talk of the Devils podcast that he’s been reliably told by insiders at Old Trafford that Heaton is the best goalkeeper at the club.
Mitten said: “I am told by people I respect at the club that Tom Heaton is the best goalkeeper at the club. You also have some side issues. Vitek’s doing really well, but he’s on loan at Bristol City.
“So, watch him for the future. I hope we get a standout new number one for Manchester United because I’m really curious as to how the situation will develop.”
Ruben Amorim unwilling to change Tom Heaton’s role
This season, following one of the games, Amorim was asked if Heaton would be a possibility as Bayindir had yet another game marred by mistakes.
It was clear from his astonished response to the query and his vehement defense of Bayindir how the Manchester United manager feels about Heaton.
Heaton, who will never compete for United, is seen as a permanent leader in the dressing room and a representative of the team.
It’s unfortunate because United actually got to the stage where they had more to gain than lose by starting Heaton at the end before they signed Lammens.
If he didn’t play in those dire circumstances, then it’s an easy assumption to make that the door is completely shut now because Lammens will be given a long rope.
It looks like United’s ‘best’ goalkeeper won’t play this season. The challenge for Lammens is to prove that Heaton’s billing as the ‘best’ also changes by the end of the season.
