United prepare €40m raid to secure 6’3 defensive colossus in January before bitter PL rival gets there first – report

It looks like Manchester United has already chosen the center-back they want to buy during the January transfer window.

Even though Man United had a busy summer transfer window, the team did not add players to address all of its on-field issues.

Center-mid and center-back are two positions that still appear to require more assistance.

All of a sudden, it seems like United has a center-back transfer strategy in place and is planning to make a deal during the January transfer window.

New defensive target

The Peoples Person revealed last week that Zeno Debast, a defender for Sporting CP, is reportedly United’s goal for their next defensive acquisition.

The fact that United manager Ruben Amorim signed Debast from Anderlecht in 2024 while he was still managing Sporting shows that he saw the 21-year-old’s potential.

Debast has a £70 million release clause, but it looks like United might try to recruit the Belgian in a different way.

Sending the scouts

CaughtOffside reported this morning that United appear to have decided how much they’re willing to pay for Debast after intensifying their pursuit of the defender.

“Defensive reinforcements will be a priority for a number of Premier League clubs in January, including Manchester United,” the report read. “Among the names under consideration is Zeno Debast, the highly regarded 21-year-old Belgian centre-back who has been impressing at Sporting CP, sources close to the agents industry have informed CaughtOffside.”

“Man United and Arsenal have dispatched scouts to Portugal in recent weeks, eager to evaluate Debast’s game in detail, the article continued. “Reports suggest Man United could test Sporting’s resolve with a bid in the region of €40 million, though that figure falls well short of the defender’s €80 million release clause.”

A possible arrangement appears to depend on a number of factors.

First, there’s a chance to sign him before Arsenal and other interested parties do.

Additionally, there is a significant discrepancy between the player’s release clause and United’s assessment of him.

If United wants to land Debast, they might have to up their offer, depending on how much interest there is in the Belgian.
