Ruben Amorim has been warned he ‘cannot play’ Manchester United goalkeeper Altay Bayindir after the international break.
Surprisingly, Amorim chose Bayindir over Andre Onana as his No. 1 at the beginning of the new season.
However, Bayindir has often appeared unsteady in goal after making a mistake against Arsenal in the Premier League opener.
Onana was given the opportunity to shine in the Carabao Cup, but he blundered and then appeared lost in the penalty shootout as Grimsby Town won a historic match.
Manchester United signed Senne Lammens on transfer deadline day as a result of Bayindir and Onana’s difficulties, although it is unclear if the young Belgian will immediately contribute to the team.
Gary Neville believed Lammens would start out as a backup goalkeeper after talking to connections at Old Trafford, but Bayindir and Onana’s difficulties might have altered that.
Amorim’s only viable choices for the season are Bayindir and Lammens, since Manchester United seems prepared to loan Onana to Turkish team Trabzonspor.
Craig Burley, a former Chelsea midfielder, claims that because of Bayindir’s difficulties with set pieces, Amorim “cannot” choose him going forward.
‘Altay Bayindir, they can’t play him,’ Burley, who won the FA Cup with Chelsea and also earned 46 caps for Scotland, said on ESPN.
‘He might be okay at shot-stopping which is what goalkeepers are paid for but he’s absolutely useless at dealing with balls in from set-pieces.
‘This new lad [Lammens] needs to be able to marshal a back four, make saves and have an authority and make a statement at set-pieces.
‘That’s what every team is going to do against United now, they’re going to launch balls into the box and the goalkeeper needs to be able to deal with it.
‘He’s either going to sink or swim. We don’t really know how he’s going to handle this scenario.’
Discussing Onana’s poor form at Old Trafford amid speculation he could move to Turkey, Burley added: ‘He’s another player who’s gone to Manchester United and got worse.
‘He cost a lot of money but he wasn’t able to marshal a back four. I thought Onana would be the real deal, it looked that way in Italy.
‘I thought he might have a Peter Schmeichel-esque aura about him and boss about players but it hasn’t happened.
‘If this new, youngish lad comes in and starts flapping about all over the place, it’s going to be a mess.’
Manchester United were said to be open to offers for both Bayindir and Onana after signing Lammens from Royal Antwerp.
But it is Onana who looks set to leave the club, although his stance on a loan move to Trabzonspor remains unclear.
“Senne is an excellent young goalkeeper with great potential,” stated Jason Wilcox, director of football at Manchester United, following the completion of a £18 million purchase for Lammens on deadline day.
“We are thrilled that he decided to sign with Manchester United following a lot of interest from other clubs.”
“I am really proud to be joining Manchester United,” Lammens continued. It truly is a dream realized.
“The last few years have been an incredible journey that has now come to an amazing end and, hopefully, marked the start of something special.”
