Manchester United suffered an embarrassing defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League final on Wednesday evening, and the backlash on social media has been relentless.
A tough pill to swallow for Red Devils supporters. Manchester United against Tottenham in the Europa League final had massive implications, both on and off the pitch
And arguably more embarrassingly, it granted Tottenham their first major trophy after 17 years. This has not gone unnoticed on socials.
Tamworth star mocks Manchester United for Europa League final loss to Spurs
In particular, one mockery of a comment came from a Tamworth star, Tom Tonks. He wrote on X: ‘Lads.
Spurs couldn’t even beat me in 90 minutes and I sell sandwiches for a living.’
Tamworth, of course, played Spurs in the FA Cup this season and despite being 96 places below Spurs in the English football pyramid, the fifth-tier club held the recent Europa League winners to a 0-0 draw after 90 minutes.
Spurs did eventually secure a 3-0 win in extra time, but that’s beside the point. Tamworth of all clubs held Spurs to a draw in regulation time. Tonks has a point. Manchester United should be ashamed, not just from the final performance, but for their showings against Ange Postecoglou’s side all season.
Manchester United’s record against Tottenham this season
Spurs have been a bogey team for United this season, and that’s despite the Lilywhites being in horrendous Premier League form themselves. They’ve defeated the Red Devils on every occasion.
