Manchester United would have hoped that their new £73 million forward would have scored by now, given the season is now four games old.
Over the summer, United repelled Newcastle United’s intense interest in luring the Slovenian international away from RB Leipzig to finish a new front three with Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha.
Cunha and Mbeumo, both of whom have years of Premier League experience, have quickly established themselves at Old Trafford, while Sesko hasn’t had much of an impact thus far.
Naturally, that can be greatly tempered by the fact that he has not yet made a Premier League appearance and has only played 80 minutes in United’s first three league games.
Before putting a lot of pressure on United’s new goal hope, Amorim was anxious to emphasize that he wanted Sesko to thoroughly adjust to a new nation and league. However, concerns were raised regarding the one game he started.
Sesko was highly criticized for being the final outfield player to take a penalty in the shootout, and he played the entire ninety minutes when United lost to League Two team Grimsby in the Carabao Cup last week.
Some onlookers were not pleased that United’s star center-forward was the tenth person to take a penalty kick and did not accept responsibility for taking a kick before defenders like Matthijs de Ligt and Harry Maguire.
Even though it was so early in his tenure at the club, some even viewed it as a serious red sign.
In an interview this week in Slovenia, Sesko acknowledged that he has needed some time to adjust and that the level is greater than what he has been accustomed to in recent years.
“The level of the matches is certainly much higher, the players and teammates are also at a higher level. After all, English football is at the highest level in the world of football,” Sesko told Ekipa.
“But I am very much looking forward to the coming period, also because I am getting better and faster in every training session, and I am also progressing in my football mentality every day.
“I wanted to move to England and, fortunately, my wish came true.”
And the ‘coming phase’ begins tonight when Sesko will start for Slovenia in their first World Cup qualifying match against Sweden at home.
On Monday, Slovenia will play Switzerland at Basel’s St. Jakob Park, and United supporters will be hoping to see why they were willing to spend so much money on the 22-year-old.
Sesko became one of the most attractive young attackers in European football last season after scoring 21 goals in all competitions at the club level.
Since joining United last month, this may be the first occasion he has sent a timely reminder of those skills.
