Despite spending more than £210 million on summer transfers, Manchester United was unable to get a new midfield player. The Reds decided to focus on their attack after having their worst season in fifty-one years.
Before the Premier League season started, Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, and Benjamin Sesko were all acquired for hefty sums of money. Senne Lammens, the club’s fourth senior goalkeeper, arrived last on the day of the deadline.
According to the Manchester Evening News, United did not prioritize midfield upgrading throughout the summer. Since the club’s alternatives are thought to be strong and adaptable, it is thought that the midfield was not at the top of their to-do list.
United’s desire in the Cameroon international never came to fruition because of Brighton & Hove Albion’s £100 million valuation of Carlos Baleba. Ederson of Atalanta, Corentin Tolisso of Stuttgart, and Angelo Stiller of Atalanta were all linked, but United remained steadfast on other targets.
Amorim will therefore have to settle for his options, at least for the first half of the season. They could, however, look to the free agency market if they are in dire need of a fresh face for their midfield.
Many players remain unsigned after the summer player turnover and are available for signing. Christian Eriksen, a former United star, is still available after his Old Trafford contract expires.
Josh Brownhill, 29, is still without a club after reportedly declining a move to Wolves late in the transfer window. After leaving Besiktas, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has not yet found a new team.
Alongside Tiemoue Bakayoko, a former Chelsea midfielder, Oriol Romeu is available after leaving Barcelona in the summer. Josh Dasilva, who left Brentford in June, has Premier League experience.
Although it’s unclear if United would even think about entering the free agent market, they do have choices if they do.
